I have been using the carpet cleaning attachment for my Kirby vacuum cleaner for years (it dispenses soap and scrubs, but doesn't suck anything up). I have had two dogs during this whole time, so after awhile every time I washed the carpets with it all I could smell was wet dog. I'm getting ready to sell my house and knew that buying a steam cleaner would be cheaper than paying for a one-time professional service.
Now, I'm left with one dog who rarely messes on the carpet but a 3 year old son who has had many a potty training "accident" on his bedroom carpet. It got so bad (despite using my Bissell Little Green Proheat immediately after the accidents) that his entire room wreaked of urine. I sprayed Febreze, washed the carpet with my Kirby, but still the smell (along with wet dog courtesy of my Kirby) persisted.
When I ordered this steam cleaner I was equipped with a remedy for cleaning the carpets to remove the urine smell. (Recipe was 1 cap distilled white vinegar, 1 cap dishwashing liquid, 1 cap Febreeze, and 1 cap of anti-foam solution). I boiled the water for the cleaner and powered it up. After cleaning the room, I made a second pass with only hot water in the tank. MIRACLE! No more pee smell. I have since followed behind with the Hoover carpet cleaning solution (mostly to change the smell in the carpet from vinegar to cleaning solution), and I am extremely pleased. Buying this Hoover SteamVac was the best money I have ever spent.
For the other carpeted rooms in my home, I use the Hoover cleaning solution with boiling water and 1 capful of Febreze. I didn't have urine odor problems anywhere else, but the carpets certainly smelled like dog and they don't anymore. I have two more rooms to go using the same formula.
I did not experience any problems with leaks - follow the instructions in the user manual carefully and you shouldn't have any problems. I would highly recommend this machine particularly if you have toddlers or pets.

What a great cleaner! So easy to use. My carpets are so clean I can't beleive it. I had some pet stains that i couldn't get out with a rental but this got it out. My carpets is softer and fresher. I've realized since reading some of the customer reviews that I haven't been using mine properly. I have been using cold water (duh!). Despite that, I cannot believe the difference in my carpets. They were very dirty (pets, previous owner didn't clean) and are about 10 shades lighter now. Very easy to assemble (whoever wrote that it's a nightmare must be extremely technically challenged). Yes, you have to empty the tank often, but it's worth the effort. I cleaned my entire house within about 3 hours. I am going to go back over the stubborn areas (with hot water!) and see what happens. We have white carpet, three cats and a dog - bad combo. One of our cats decided the carpet upstairs was his litterbox, so the dog thought she could use it too! Commercial steam cleaning did nothing but disperse the pee smell. I bought this Hoover after reading the 350+ reviews and I love it. One trick I have learned is I SOAKED my carpet spots with oxyclean then used straight boiling water in the Hoover. Worked well and really took care of the smell. I have cleaned my handmade oriental rugs with it and the hoover detergent - did wonderfully!
